We are deeply committed to serving expectant mothers with compassion, excellence, and dedication. You’re not just a client; you’re a mother with a unique story to share. And this is more than a business; it’s our passion and calling. As we take the time to know you, we’ll do our best to honor your hopes and dreams for this birth. With listening hearts and nurturing hands, we’re ready to walk beside you through every part of this meaningful season of motherhood.
Originally from Mississippi, I’m blessed to be married to my dearest friend of 37 years, Dennis. I’m a mother to 7 amazing children, a proud “Mimi” to 8 beautiful grandkids, and a pastor’s wife with a deep love for home, church, and community.
My Journey to Birth Work
My passion for birth began before I ever heard the word “doula.” As a young wife, I was inspired by older mothers who served their families with grace and strength, and I knew motherhood would become the highest calling in my life. In 1989, during my first pregnancy, we were introduced to midwifery and natural birth, and though my labor was long, I fell in love with the birth process.

Over the next 13 years, we welcomed all 7 of our children at home, each experience marking me deeply.
From Friend to Doula
Their births didn’t just mark me as a mother; they planted seeds for a passion for birth and nurturing other moms in labor with the same care that meant so much to me. Soon after my own births, friends began asking me to support them during labor. I simply showed up with presence, peace, and encouragement, not knowing this “help” had a name. When I later learned the word doula means “female servant,” something clicked. I had found my calling. For over 30 years, I’ve supported women as a birth and postpartum doula, childbirth educator, childbirth assistant, doula educator, and mentor, always eager to learn new and better ways to serve mothers with greater skill and compassion.
When I’m not supporting moms, I’m nurturing something; mentoring young women, spending time with my family, caring for animals, or tending to my (many!) houseplants and greenhouse seedlings. I’ve even helped our Chocolate lab, Missy, give birth to over 50 puppies! One day, I dream of opening Mimi’s Petting Farm: a space where children can feed and hold baby animals with me.

Hi, I'm Mel! As a wife, mother of four, and devoted follower of the Lord Jesus, I understand firsthand the profound journey of bringing new life into the world. I'm a GEM-trained birth doula who has been supporting families in the Kansas City area for 7 years.
My heart for serving others began early in life. I had a sister born prematurely who developed cerebral palsy, and I spent my young life caring for her. This experience grew in me a deep love for serving and helping others. I was blessed to work with the elderly throughout high school and college as a CNA in assisted living facilities and hospice care. Later, I joined my husband in the Army Reserves and had the honor of serving my country on a deployment to Iraq and Kuwait alongside him.

My calling to become a doula grew from my own birth experience. After feeling unprepared and unsupported during my first birth, I knew I wanted to ensure no other mother would walk that path alone. All four of my children were born unmedicated, deepening my appreciation for the strength women possess and the support they deserve during this sacred time.
I believe birth is both a miraculous physical event and a deeply spiritual experience. My heart is to provide gentle, quiet care while empowering you with education and helping your partner become your strongest support and encourager. I offer childbirth education and breastfeeding support, always honoring your unique preferences and providing evidence-based information about your options.
Whether you're planning a hospital birth with an epidural, C-section, VBAC, home birth, or natural hospital birth, I'm here to support whatever path feels right for your family. Every birth story is beautiful and deserves to be honored.
When I'm not supporting birthing families, you'll find me homeschooling my children, tending our small homestead, gardening, reading, hiking, or planning family adventures. I'm based in Grandview and serve families throughout the greater Kansas City area.
I'd love to meet you and learn about your hopes and dreams for your birth experience!
